What is a Peppol ID?

A Peppol ID is a unique code that businesses and organisations use to identify themselves on the Peppol network. It is like a telephone number or email address: suppliers and clients need each other’s Peppol ID to be able to exchange invoices.

A Peppol ID is made up of two parts separated by a colon, for example 0208:0123456789.

These two parts are called:

  1. Scheme ID: a four-digit prefix indicating the type of identifier.
  2. Participant ID: the actual identifier, the unique code that identifies the organisation on the Peppol network.

What different types of identifiers are there?

There are numerous types of identifiers worldwide. The most commonly used scheme IDs in Belgium are:

  • 0208: Belgian CBE number
  • 9925: the VAT number
  • 0088: GLN (Global Location Number), an international code used by businesses with multiple locations

In the Netherlands, the Chamber of Commerce number (scheme ID: 0106) is used as the identifier.

The complete list of all types of identifiers used worldwide can be found on the OpenPeppol website.

You can easily look up the Belgian CBE number on CBE Public Search.

How to obtain a Peppol ID as a business?

You will be assigned your Peppol ID upon registration by the Peppol Access Point you join. For example, if you create a Billit account and complete all the steps, we will immediately ensure that you receive a valid Peppol ID.

Can a company have multiple Peppol IDs?

Yes, that is possible. Businesses may register based on various types of identifiers. In that case, intelligent invoicing software such as Billit will search for the most suitable Peppol ID based on all the identifiers entered.

Some large companies prefer to receive invoices for their various departments separately. They can use multiple GLN numbers for this purpose. Intelligent invoicing software will always let you decide which primary identifier should be used to send invoices to the right department.

How can I look up a Peppol ID?

In most cases, this is not necessary. For example in Belgium, the rule is that a business must be registered on the Peppol network with at least its CBE number. You just need to enter the CBE number (or VAT number or other identifier) in your company file, client files and supplier files in Billit to exchange e-invoices via Peppol.

You can look up any underlying, full Peppol ID in the Peppol Directory.

Billit also lets you retrieve your company’s full Peppol ID via My company > E-invoicing > Open the Peppol integration. You will find your Peppol ID under 'electronic address'. In most cases, you will find two, as Billit registers your company based on both your CBE number and your VAT number.

Is it possible to register an incorrect Peppol ID?

In principle, that is not possible. This is because when you create your Billit account, you have to enter your business identifier (CBE number, VAT number, etc.) and the managing director has to identify themselves. This will ensure that businesses are linked to the correct Peppol ID.

What if I send an invoice to the wrong Peppol ID?

If you enter the wrong identifier in a client file, your invoice will, of course, be sent to the wrong client. This is like sending a document to the wrong email address. Once the invoice has been sent, you cannot withdraw it, but you can create a credit note and correct the identifier in your client file.
