A digital invoice (also called electronic invoice or e-invoice) is an invoice which you can send, receive, view and process in a digital way i.e. via computer, tablet or smartphone.
There are two types
When it comes to digital invoices, there is an important distinction between two types:
A 'regular' electronic invoice is usually a PDF file that is sent via email. These invoices are not structured according to a fixed format and do not comply with the legal obligations that will come in to force in Belgium as of 2026.
A structured electronic invoice, however, does have a fixed format which allows software all over the world to read and process them automatically. These invoices are created in XML-format (Extensible Markup Language), according to a standard such as the Universal Business Language (UBL).
